Mandate

The Makerere University Petroleum and Geology Society (MPGS) aims at uniting students, lecturers and alumni from the Department of Geology and Petroleum Studies, School of Physical Sciences, College of Natural Sciences (CoNAS), Makerere University. It thus creates a collaboration between students and professionals in petroleum and geosciences related disciplines. As part of the mandate, MPGS organizes annual career seminars and exhibitions that target students from Makerere University, particularly the Department of Geology and Petroleum Studies as well as student representatives from various institutions across the country.

Career Seminar

This year MPGS organized a career seminar on the 25 March 2022 at the College of Engineering, Design, Art and Technology Conference Hall under the theme: Uganda Post FID: Harnessing opportunities in the oil and gas industry for promoting inclusive and sustainable economic growth for all”. Its aim was to introduce career opportunities and guidance towards programmes to improve students academic, professional and soft skills in preparation for careers in the oil and gas industry. MPGS is currently under the patronage of Dr. Simon Echegu. The career seminar was organized by the MPGS executive led by Mr. Mutabazi Julius, a final year student of the BSc (Petroleum Geosciences and Production) programme.

The event was attended by representatives of international oil companies, government agencies, renown professionals in the sector, lecturers and administrators at the College of Natural Sciences. The Director, Directorate of Petroleum, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development was the Guest of Honour. The Deputy Principal, College of Natural Sciences, Dr Juma Kasozi graced the event, and the Head of Department Geology and Petroleum Studies was represented by Dr Arthur G. Batte. Total Energies was represented by Mr. Jean Gavalda, Director Business Development and Corporate affairs who promised to continue his support towards the Society to provide opportunities and support in education. Uganda National Oil Company (UNOC) was represented by Ms. Lyoidah Kiconco, Head of Exploration and New Ventures. Ms. Namubiru Betty Jackie (Manager National Content and Capacity Building), Mr. James Okwi (Skills Development Officer) and Mr. Joseph Nyakairu (Senior National Content Officer) represented the Petroleum Authority of Uganda (PAU). Others included, Mr. Simon Faurie, Director Geology and Geophysics Skills, Dr. Tom Buringuriza, Country Manager Armour Energy, Ms. Patricia Nansamba, Tarn Energy Services. Hon. Eng Asiimwe Jonard, Project Development Manager MOTA-Engil Uganda and the Executive Director Institute of Metallurgy, Mining and Petroleum Engineering, and Mr. Robert Tugume (now at PAU) the Founding Patron of MUPGS.

Activities

  • Industry professionals were assigned different topics which they presented in line with the theme of the day. These greatly enriched the students with  knowledge on discovering opportunities, personal branding, energy transitions, soft skills and leadership among others.
  • A number of student-led innovations were exhibited including carbon capture, storage and utilization, petroleum play system.
  • An annual society magazine, ‘THE GEO-PERSPECTIVE’ was launched on this day. The Geo-perspective aims at providing comprehensive information about the oil and gas industry from the perspective of government officials, students and professionals.
  • MPGS President, Mr. Mutabazi Julius, the Public Relations Officer Mr. Lukaaga Kevin, and the Deputy Chief Editor, Ms Emmanuella Kaducu Lagen were hosted on 93.3 K Fm’s Hot Seat programme on the evening of 24 March 2022 to discuss the MPGS career seminar and its relevance. On the 25 March 2022 they held further discussions with TV stations including NTV, Spark TV, UBC, and Star TV.

The Department of Plant Sciences, Microbiology & Biotechnology, Makerere University in partnership with Leipzig Universität (Germany) and Inter-Regional University of Industrial Engineering, Biotechnology & Applied Sciences (IRGIB)-Benin is coordinating an online course Bio-Biz: Business Models for Sustainable Use of Biodiversity under the Access to Benefit Sharing (ABSbio) project.

In this course participants will learn development of sustainable business models. In the light of the rapid loss of biodiversity and the quest for sustainable business solutions to customer needs anywhere in the world, linking entrepreneurial training to knowledge about biodiversity resources is vital. This course aims to provide this link for entrepreneurs.

The course is self-paced but should be completed in one month.

This is a call to invite interested staff and students to enroll for the course following steps in link below.

Course Completion: A certificate for successful completion to be awarded. Also nine best performers will be sponsored to participate in the upcoming summer school in Benin.

Makerere University Chancellor, Prof. Ezra Suruma has appointed Dr Juma Kasozi, Deputy Principal, College of Natural Sciences (CoNAS) for the next four years effective 1st April 2022. Dr Kasozi takes on from Prof. Fredrick Jones Muyodi who handed over office to the Principal of CoNAS, Dr Tumps Winston Ireeta on 7th March 2022.

Today, 7th April 2022, the Principal handed over to Dr Kasozi at a ceremony witnessed by the Deans, Heads of Department, and administrators at CoNAS.

About Dr Kasozi

Dr Juma Kasozi is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics at Makerere University. He has served as Dean, School of Physical Sciences and Head, Department of Mathematics at Makerere University. He holds a PhD from the Makerere University-University of Bergen, MSc (Mathematical Modelling), University of Zimbabwe, and a Bachelor of Science (Mathematics, Physics, Psychology) from Makerere University. He is member of the Uganda Mathematical Society (UMS). He is very well published and has research interests in Insurance Mathematics and Financial Mathematics, Numerical methods and Optimization techniques in risk theory, probability of ruin, dividends, Re-insurance, Investments, Pension schemes, Life and Non-Life insurance. He has handled several funded projects worth millions of US dollars. He is a Dutch trained eLearning instructor and has been involved in several IODeL (Internet, Open, Distance and eLearning) assignments. Dr Kasozi is British trained in customer relations management (and a trainer). He has been involved in the core functions of a university (teaching, research, and outreach) at Makerere University and several other universities in Uganda and beyond. He has served on several committees notably the Steering Committee of the MasterCard Foundation, and also on the Selection Committee of the same foundation, Natural Science Programme Committee, Uganda National Commission for UNESCO (UNATCOM); National Curriculum Development Center (NCDC); University Senate, Pre-entry and Mature Age.

In his remarks at the handover ceremony, Dr Kasozi appreciated the appointing authority for entrusting him with the responsibility to serve as Deputy Principal, CoNAS. He also appreciated the College leadership and staff for the great work, and called for more teamwork in the execution of duties.

While handing over to the Principal on 7th March 2022, the outgoing Deputy Principal, Prof. Fredrick Muyodi implored the incoming Principal to follow up on a number of issues. These include; strengthening the research and grants office, popularizing the College programmes, following up on the poor performance in Biology in secondary schools, and strengthening online teaching and learning, as well as pedagogical training especially for the junior members of staff. He also implored the incoming Deputy Principal to follow up on the bidding process to host the Centre for Nuclear Science and Technology at Makerere University. The bidding process is still ongoing with evaluation of potential sites high on the agenda. The Centre for Nuclear Science and Technology will be a one stop national centre with infrastructure for nuclear science education, training, research and development in Uganda.

Dr Esther Katuura has been appointed Head, Department of Plant Sciences, Microbiology and Biotechnology, College of Natural Sciences (CoNAS). She takes on from Dr Arthur K. Tugume who was recently appointed Dean, School of Biosciences after serving his second term of office for close to two years. Dr Tugume served as Head, Department of Plant Sciences, Microbiology and Biotechnology for two terms (2012-2016 and 2020-2022).

On 4th April 2022, Dr Tugume handed over office to Dr Katuura at a ceremony witnessed by the Principal, CoNAS, Dr Tumps Winston Ireeta and Senior members of staff in the Department. Presenting his handover report, Dr Tugume congratulated Dr Katuura upon her appointment and acknowledged the contribution of former heads of Department. Since its establishment in 1956, the Department of Plant Sciences, Microbiology and Biotechnology has had 13 heads of Department including; Prof. Edna M. Lind (1956-1962), Prof. Robert T. Milburn (1962-1974), Prof. Hannington K. Taligoola (RIP) 1974-1976 and 1984-1986), Prof. Hannington Oryem-Origa (1986-1988 and 1988-1990), Prof. Remegius Bukenya – Ziraba (RIP) 1990-2002), Prof. Patrick Mucunguzi (2002-2004 and 2004-2008), Prof. Esezah K.Kakudidi (2008-2012),  Dr Arthur Tugume (2012-2016 and 2020-2022), and Dr Perpetua Ipulet (2016-2020).  Dr Katuura is the 14th Head of Department.

Outlining the achievements registered in the two years (2020-2022) of his second term of office, Dr Tugume said the Department had completed the revision of several programmes and developed four new programmes. The revised programmes include; Bachelor of Science Biological – Botany, Bachelor of Science in Conservation Biology, Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology, Master of Science in Botany – three tracks (other 2 tracks elevated to stand alone MSc programmes). Proposed programmes include; Master of Science in Genetics, Master of Science in Microbiology and Plant pathology, Master of Science in Applied Economic Botany and Bachelor of Science in Ethnobotany. Other achievements included the documentation of the 66-year old departmental history.  He however expressed concern over the low rates of graduate completion and limited practical exposure of students due to lack of funds. 

Dr Tugume appreciated Makerere University Management for the opportunity accorded to him to serve as head of Department for two terms. He appreciated staff and students for the unmatched teamwork and support.

He urged the new head to consider the current staff as the most critical and most important resource in the pursuit of her duties and pledged continued support to the Department.

The incoming head expressed gratitude to the University Management for the appointment.  She appreciated Dr Tugume for his significant contribution, and pledged to carry on with the good works to make the Department better.

Dr Esther Katuura holds a PhD (Phytomedicine), MSc. Plant Taxonomy and Biosystematics and Bachelor of Science, all from Makerere University. She is a Lecturer in the Department of Plant Science, Microbiology and Biotechnology, Makerere University. She also worked as a Principal Research Officer, Natural Chemotherapeutic Research Institute-Ministry of Health, Uganda.

MANDATE AND FOCUS OF THE DEPARTMENT OF Plant SCIENCES, MICROBIOLOGY & BIOTECHNOLOGY (PMB)

For now more than four decades, the department has been alive to the fact that the diversity of “plant sciences” as a pure science fits in the light of the roles plants play in the maintenance of life on earth. Both higher and lower plants inclusive of ocean and fresh water phytoplanktons generate and supply the earth’s 100% oxygen through photosynthesis, and for this reason are the main support of all other lifeforms on earth.

The Department of PMB, therefore, has over 4 decades themed its academic and research operations to cover, promote and provide scientific leadership as defined in 6 themes stated below:

THEME 1: Classical Botany: Phycology, Plant Taxonomy, Systematics and Diversity.

THEME 2: Economic Botany: Ethnobiology, Bioprospecting, People-and-plants.

THEME 3: Plant Physiology: Development, Phytoremediation and Eco-physiology.

THEME 4: Ecology: Nature Conservation and Ecosystem Services.

THEME 5: Microbiology: Plant-microbiota Interactions, Microbiology

 Professor Mikael Passare

Mikael Passare was a brilliant mathematician, world leading in the field of residue theory in several complex variables and during later years in tropical geometry. He was accepted as a graduate student at Uppsala University in 1980 and was awarded a PhD degree in 1984. He was professor at Stockholm University from 1994. He advised nine PhD students to a doctoral degree, 1992–2009.

Mikael had many commissions of trust, for instance Head of the Department of Mathematics at Stockholm University, Deputy Director of the Mittag-Leffler Institute, Member of the Board of the International Science Programme, Member of the Committee for Developing Countries of the European Mathematical Society, and President of the Swedish Mathematical Society. He was very active in the development of mathematics in low income countries.  

Post-doc award

The awards are intended for young scientists in mathematics, having a PhD degree not older than 10 years, and will support a 1–3 month scientific visit to Sweden, primarily at Stockholm University or Uppsala University. Grants will be given to cover subsistence allowance, accommodation and travel costs. The maximum amount will be 70,000 SEK. An award can be granted for a second visit depending on the outcome of the first visit.

How to apply

In addition to a CV, including a publication list, the application shall contain a brief description of the applicant´s research project, the purpose of the trip, an invitation letter from the host institution, the local contact person for the visit, and a short description of the planned activity during the visit. A support letter from the home university should also be included (see contact persons in the eligible countries below).

Applicants should have graduated with a PhD degree in mathematics during the last 10 years and should be employed at a university in one of the following countries: Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mali, Mozambique, Niger, Rwanda, Senegal, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia.

Deadline for application

The applications should be sent to ISP no later than May 15th, 2022. The visit should take place during the academic year 2022/2023.

Makerere University College of Natural Sciences through the NutriFish Project participated in the Harvest Money Expo held on 18th-20th March 2022 at Kololo Independence Grounds, Kampala. The annual event is an initiative by Vision Group in Kampala, organized with support from the Netherlands Embassy and other partners.

The theme of this year’s Harvest Money Expo was, ‘Farming as a Business’. The expo aims at giving farmers the best agronomical practices and value addition tips throughout the production value chains of the different enterprises, as well as equipping farmers with knowledge on whatever they want to engage in.

The expo attended by thousands of agriculture enthusiasts from all over the country presents farmers a platform to showcase their innovations and new farming opportunities but also to learn from other exhibitors. It also presents exhibitors an opportunity to meet potential partners and clients.

Supported by the International Research Development Centre (IDRC) and the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) through their joint programme, Cultivate Africa's Future Fund (CultiAF), NutriFish aims to increase availability, access and consumption of underutilized small fishes and processing by-products for sustainable food, nutrition security and better livelihoods of vulnerable groups in Uganda. The NutriFish project is implemented in Uganda by the Department of Zoology, Entomology and Fisheries Sciences - Makerere University in partnership with the National Fisheries Resources Research Institute (NaFIRRI) - National Agricultural Research Organization (NARO), NUTREAL Limited and McGill University, Canada.

Some of the foods enriched with small pelagic fishes

The project recognizes the nutritive value of the Small Pelagic Fishes (SPFs), as they are rich in bioavailable micronutrients including iron, zinc, calcium, vitamin A and essential fatty acids (Omega 3, 6). Besides, they are consumed whole, which enhances their nutritional benefits compared to the large fishes. Most consumers, including vulnerable groups in rural and peri-urban communities can purchase SPFs in small quantities at relatively affordable prices. The SPFs are therefore crucial in improving human nutrition, particularly during the first 1000 days of life (from conception to the second birth day) as they contribute to maternal health and better child development.

SPFs are however not being consumed in sufficient quantities due to: high levels of adulteration with grit, soil and sand; off-flavors (smelly fish); bitter taste and lack knowledge of the different methods of preparation. Traditionally, the SPFs are regarded as fish for the poor and livestock. Currently per capita fish consumption in Uganda is between 10-12 Kilograms per person per year which is below the internationally recommended amount of 26 kilograms per person per year according to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

As key stakeholders in Uganda's Agricultural sector, the NutriFish project team led by Dr Jackson Efitre participated in the 2022 Harvest Money Expo to sensitize and increase awareness of the nutritional benefits of Small Pelagic Fishes including Rastrineobola argentea (Mukene), Brycinus nurse (Ragoogi), and Engraulicypris bredoi (Muziri).

During the exhibition, participants were introduced to the cookbook developed by the NutriFish project team with the aim of increasing consumption of the SPFs.

The cookbook contains easy-to-cook recipes for dishes, soups, sauces and porridge. The recipes were developed based on available common local ingredients, consumer preferences in the different communities and affordability by rural and peri-urban communities. Most of the ingredients can be grown locally or purchased in the local markets. By using these recipes, it is envisaged that the households will have the opportunity to consume SPFs in diverse forms. The high micronutrient content inherent in the SPFs included in the recipes will particularly benefit the vulnerable groups such as women of child bearing age and children below the age of five. These recipes have been demonstrated in selected fishing communities and peri-urban areas in Kampala.

The cookbook is intended for households, communities, local government staff (Fisheries, Community Development Officers, Nutrition staff and Village Health teams), line ministries (Health, Education, Agriculture and Fisheries) and non-governmental organizations. The cookbook can be used alongside other resources, such as the Uganda food and Nutritional Strategy and Investment Plan (2004), Uganda Food and Nutrition Policy, Uganda Nutrition Action Plan (2011-2016), National Food and Nutrition Strategy (2005) to promote consumption of SPFs particularly among vulnerable groups (women of reproductive age and children under the age of five years.

The International Petroleum Technology Conference, IPTC is the flagship multidisciplinary technical event in the Eastern Hemisphere. IPTC is sponsored by four industry organizations and societies namely; the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG), the European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers (EAGE), the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG), and the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE).

The oil and gas industry continues to invest in initiatives aimed at engaging young people in the energy sector in order to ensure the world’s ever-growing energy demands will be met. IPTC supports this effort through its educational activities. This year’s edition of IPTC was held under the patronage of His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman Abdulaziz Al-Saud, Crown Prince, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia with Saud Aramco as the exclusive host.

An accolade for the first place in the Field Development challenge awarded to the Makerere students team

At each IPTC event, the top 100 undergraduate science, geoscience and engineering students from around the world are invited to participate in IPTC’s Education Week. This program aims to give students a clear insight into the industry they are about to join and the opportunity to interact with a number of major industry employers who are looking to recruit the best talent from institutions around the world.

Four students from the Department of Geology and Petroleum Studies, College of Natural Sciences (CoNAS), Makerere University; Busingye Diana, Oyire Gerald, Kusolo Solomon Matanda and Mugoya Michael, were successfully selected to be part of the 2022 Education Week that took place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia from 19 to 23 February 2022.

During the five-day programme, the students experienced a multitude of activities that aimed at preparing them for a life beyond the university. These activities included developing their professional skills by learning together on joint projects, networking with their peers and executives in the oil and gas industry, attending IPTC technical and panel sessions and participating in dynamic road trips. Students were grouped into 19 different teams where they participated in different competitions such as the Geo-steering competition organized by ROGII, Scavenger Hunt by Schlumberger and the Field Development challenge using Petrel and PIPESIM organized by Schlumberger.

The Makerere students team won first place award in both the Field Development challenge and the Geo-steering challenge.  CALL FOR APPLICATIONS: MSc SCHOLARSHIP UNDER PAIRWISE PROJECT

A. Background

The PAIRWISE project focuses on dispersal and dynamics of antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB), antibiotic resistance genes (ARG) and antibiotics (ATB) in aquatic environments affected by wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), with a ‘One Health’ perspective (https://www.jpiamr.eu/projects/pairwise/) in the catchments of both River Rwizi and Aswa. Overall objectives are to evaluate: i) dispersal of ARB, ARG and ATB in surface waters downstream of WWTPs; ii) carriage of ARB and ARG in livestock linked to surface waters influenced by WWTPs; and iii) role of aquatic birds in dispersal of ARB and ARG.

B. Call for applications

As part of the PAIRWISE capacity building component, the College invites applications for a one-year research scholarship tenable at Makerere University. The research area is: “Assessment of the level and dispersal of ATB in river water upstream and downstream of wastewater treatment plants and hospital effluent” 

C. Scholarship Benefits

The scholarship will support tuition, research costs, and a modest stipend. The applicants must therefore be full-time students. The support is available to applicants who have successfully completed Year One and preparing to start research projects in the 2021/2022 Academic Year.

D. Eligibility

- The scholarship is open to eligible MSc. students who have duly registered at Makerere University

- Applicant should have strong background/experience in analytical chemistry or biochemistry

- Applications from suitably qualified females are particularly encouraged

- Willingness and ability to work in remote areas of western and northern Uganda

Agriculture is the main economic activity that greatly contributes to the development of Uganda. Hence, its growth is of strategic importance to the country. Despite the improved annual growth rate (3.4% on average) registered over the period 2015-2020, the agriculture sector still falls short of achieving the target (6.0% per annum) set in the Vision 2040 and NDPII (NDP III, 2020). Fish has been identified as one of the 10 priority agricultural commodities to foster a sustainable agro-industrialization agenda in Uganda because of its contribution to national GDP (3%), agricultural GDP (12%) employment (1.2 million people), and foreign exchange revenues (USD 171.36 m in 2014). Despite the enormous potential for fish production, with approximately 44,000 km2 (20%) of Uganda’s total surface area covered by freshwaters (lakes, rivers and swamps), the fisheries resources are currently under-exploited due to over-reliance on capture fisheries and limited investment in aquaculture. However, capture fisheries are in decline due to pollution, overfishing and weak enforcement of regulations. The government considers aquaculture as a vital sector that can provide jobs, improve food and nutrition security, as well as livelihoods of the people. This could in turn produce critical volumes of fish to fill the growing gap in the national fish supply as wild fish catches continue to decline. The government is targeting production from aquaculture and fisheries to hit 1.7million tones by the year 2030.

However, as a commercial industry, aquaculture remains underdeveloped despite the significant potential for development into a viable commercial sector. The main constraints include: poor quality feeds and lack of hatchery feeds, insufficient production and low qualities of fry, weak capacity and skill levels of staff to manage hatcheries, lack of necessary equipment, very little formal organisation of fish farmers into producer groups, lack of a documented and implemented set of Best Management Practices (BMPs) for catfish and tilapia, and environmental threats such as climate change. Harnessing the geographic dividends of Uganda expansive water bodies for aquaculture requires human capital development.

Mak selected to offer training services under the PESCA project

To boost capacity in the aquaculture industry, the Government of Uganda through the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF) has partnered with Makerere University Department of Zoology, Entomology and Fisheries Sciences to offer training services under the Promoting Environmentally Sustainable Commercial Aquaculture (PESCA) project.

The five-year project supported by the European Union aims to support the development of a competitive, job-intensive, environmentally-sustainable and climate-resilient aquaculture value chain in Uganda.

Specific objectives; (i) to improve the quality of fish seed used by smallholders and commercial fish farmers through improved broodstock; (2) increase the output, access, supply and use of quality fish seed amongst smallholder and commercial fish farmers; (3) to improve the quality, cost-effectiveness and management of formulated feeds based on locally produced improved crop varieties and non-conventional animal protein sources; (4) to identify and map at least 5 High Potential Aquaculture Zones (HPAZs) in the different Agro-Ecological Zones (AEZs); (5) to test and optimise different production systems for transformation of smallholder farmers to commercial farmers in at least 3 AEZs of Uganda; (6) to establish an aquaculture training hub for out-growers and extension workers at NARO - Aquaculture Research & Development Centre Kajjansi.

Training services to be offered

Under the programme, the Department of Zoology, Entomology and Fisheries will, among other things, facilitate internships and job placements for undergraduate students, supervise the performances of students, and assist them in preparation of their internship reports. The Department will also carry out customized modular short-term trainings –defining the course content and training methods as well as assigning instructors for the short courses. It will also set the criteria and select MSc students to be given research funds, define the financial support to be offered to the selected students, determine research areas in which the MSc students will carry out their research, assess the research proposals of the selected students, supervise research and performance of the students and guide the students in preparation of their research reports.

The meeting was attended by among others, Dr Namulawa Victoria Tibenda, Aquaculture Research Scientist based at the Kajjansi Aquaculture Research Development Centre; Dr Gertrude Atukunda, the Principal Investigator, PESCA project; Dr. Winnie Nkalubo, Director of Research for the National Fisheries Resources Research Institute (NaFIRRI); and Dr Bwanika Joseph from the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries.

The outgoing Deputy Principal, College of Natural Sciences (CoNAS), Prof. Fredrick Jones Muyodi has today, 7th March 2022 handed over to the Principal, Dr Tumps Winston Ireeta. Prof. Muyodi has served as Deputy Principal, CoNAS for four years and eight months starting July 2017 to January 2022.

Presenting his handover report, Prof. Muyodi highlighted some of his achievements including; the establishment and operationalization of the CoNAS Grants/Research office with support from the Carnegie Cooperation of New York; successful coordination/management of internship, revision and development of CoNAS programmes, examination processes, and appointments; effectively created and managed a database for external and internal examiners; eliminated backlog and ensured timely payment of external examiners. With support from various development partners including SIDA, the Carnegie Cooperation of New York, Wellcome Trust, APPEAR, RUFORUM, and LVEMPII, Prof. Muyodi supported the advancement of research and graduate training at the College by participating in the endorsement of research teams and mentoring/supervising a number of students. Prof. Muyodi has and continues to serve on various academic, research and administrative committees of the University.

According to Prof. Muyodi, there are several pending tasks that the incoming Deputy Principal should follow up on. These include; strengthening the research and grants office, popularizing the College programmes, following up on the poor performance in Biology in secondary schools, and strengthening online teaching and learning, as well as pedagogical training especially for the junior members of staff. He also implored the incoming Deputy Principal to follow up on the bidding process to host the Centre for Nuclear Science and Technology at Makerere University. The bidding process is still ongoing with evaluation of potential sites high on the agenda. The Centre for Nuclear Science and Technology will be a one stop national centre with infrastructure for nuclear science education, training, research and development in Uganda.

Prof. Muyodi appreciated all members of staff at the College for the support rendered to him during his term of office. He specifically appreciated the former Principal, Prof. J.Y.T Mugisha for the cordial working relationship, and the College academic leaders and registrars who demonstrated high level of integrity in managing students’ results and other learning and examination processes. “The registrars including Ms. Josephine Ataro, Ms. Agnes Kemigisha, Ms. Helen Kalema Ssali (current College Registrar), Ms. Annet Khabuya and Mr. Albert Baine have been a great resource to the office of the Deputy Principal. They have demonstrated high level professionalism and commitment to their work and this has greatly minimized complaints from students. I am indebted for the support,” he noted. He equally acknowledged the support of his Secretary, Ms. Emily Namatovu. “My success largely depended on her hard work, availability and reliability.”

Prof. Muyodi expressed gratitude to the two outgoing Deans, Prof. Muhammad Ntale (School of Physical Sciences) and Dr Joseph Kyambadde (School of Biosciences) for diligently supporting him and serving the College with utmost commitment.

He appreciated the offices of the Vice Chancellor, University Secretary and University Bursar for the positive and timely response to needs of the College.

Prof. Muyodi pledged total support to the Principal, incoming Deputy Principal and all the new leaders at CoNAS. “I am going back to my mother unit- the Department of Zoology, Entomology and Fisheries Sciences, which I have continuously served as a professor and supervisor of undergraduate and graduate students, a researcher and consultant offering outreach services to the community. I will however remain available for service,” he noted.

In his remarks, the Principal of CoNAS, Dr Tumps Winston Ireeta applauded Prof. Muyodi for the great service to the College and the University in general.

Dr Arthur K. Tugume has been appointed Dean, School of Biosciences, College of Natural Sciences (CoNAS), Makerere University. He will serve a four-year term effective 1st March 2022. Dr Tugume, who has been Head, Department of Plant Sciences, Microbiology and Biotechnology takes on from Dr Joseph Kyambadde who has held the position since February 2018.

Dr Kyambadde handed over to Dr Tugume today, 7th February 2022 at a ceremony overseen by the outgoing Deputy Principal, Prof. Fredrick Jones Muyodi and witnessed by the Principal, Dr Tumps Winston Ireeta, and the College academic and administrative leaders.

During his term of office, Dr Kyambadde has registered numerous achievements. He led the review of curricula for College programmes including; Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Science –External, Bachelor of Sports Science, Bachelor of Science in Conservation Biology, Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology, Bachelor of Science in Fisheries and Aquaculture, Master of Science in Biochemistry, Master of Science in Botany, and Master of Science in Zoology. The programmes have been successfully reviewed, approved by the University structures and are due for submission to the National Council for Higher Education for accreditation. Additionally, Dr Kyambadde oversaw the amalgamation of the Bachelor of Science programme, mitigated the closure threats to the Sports Science Unit by realigning the programme to meet the intended purpose, and chaired the Graduate Training and Research Committee to fast-track presentations of graduate students’ proposals interrupted by the outbreak of COVID-19 and the subsequent mitigation measures. During his tenure, four new academic programmes have been approved at College level. These are; Master of Science in Genetics, Master of Science in Microbiology and Plant Pathology, Master of Science in Applied Economic Botany, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Zoology.

Dr Kyambadde has also served on various committees of the University. He has been a member of the University Senate (2018-2022), member of the Senate Admissions Committee (2018-2022), member of the Mature Age and Pre-entry Exams Committee (2018-2022), member of the CoNAS Management Committees, and member of the College Curriculum Review Committee.

Presenting his handover report, Dr Kyambadde appreciated the University Management for granting him the opportunity to serve as Dean, School of Biosciences. He congratulated the new dean upon his appointment and acknowledged the support rendered to him by the former Principal, Prof. J.Y.T Mugisha, the outgoing Deputy Principal, Prof. Fredrick Jones Muyodi, and all the academic and administrative leaders he served with during his term of office. He also appreciated all members of staff at CoNAS for the support and cordial working relationship, and pledged to continue supporting the incoming Dean and the College leadership in general.

In his remarks, the incoming Dean, Dr Arthur K. Tugume thanked the University Management for appointing him to the position. He commended his predecessor for the achievements registered and committed to further improve the school.

About Dr Arthur K. Tugume

Dr Arthur K. Tugume is an Associate Professor in the Department of Plant Sciences, Microbiology and Biotechnology, College of Natural Sciences, Makerere University. He attained his PhD (Plant Pathology) in 2010 from the University of Helsinki (Finland). He holds an MSc in Crop Science (Plant Breeding and Genetics), and a BSc in Botany and Biochemistry, both from Makerere University. He is highly experienced in the subject areas of Plant Pathology and Genetics.

He has served Makerere University in academic and administrative capacities: He was a member of the Biosciences programmes restructuring sub-committee (2010-2012) charged with the re-structuring of academic programmes in the domain of Biological Sciences at Makerere to align with the University’s collegiate system of governance. He served as Chairman, College of Natural Sciences’ Norwegian Higher Education Development (NORHED) capacity building programme (2012-2013), Chairman School of Biosciences research groups (2012-2014), and Chairman College of Natural Sciences (CoNAS) Research and Grants Initiative (2012-to-date). He has attended several international scientific fora in relation to plant pathology, biotechnology, capacity building and leadership in general.

Resource Mobilization, Scientific Research & International Collaboration: Dr Tugume’s research collaboration involves networks from Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Finland, Czech Republic, Poland, Japan, England, Germany and USA. Since 2010, he has been Principal Investigator, Co-investigator, Coordinator, or Champion of various projects in the budget ranges of US$60,000 to US$5.7million for scientific research and/or institutional infrastructural/curriculum development. To mention a few: he was the Chairman of the Technical advisory committee (TAC) for a 6-year (2012-2017) IITA-led US$6.2million project operating in five countries (Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, and Mozambique). This project undertook germplasm exchange of elite cassava genotypes and accelerated the development of cassava varieties with dual resistance to the two most destructive virus diseases of Cassava in the region: Cassava mosaic disease (CMD) and Cassava brown streak disease (CBSD). He was the Coordinator and Team Leader for a 5-year (2016-2020) Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Makerere University, Uganda, and Okayama University (OU), Japan. This MoU opened windows of collaborative activities between the two institutions in the areas of: Exchange of students, Exchange of faculty/staff, collaborative research, instructional and cultural programmes, and Exchange of research information. He is the coordinator of an AfDB-sponsored development project (US$3.8millon) at Makerere University (via the Ministry of Education and Sports) undertaking the renovation and equipping a Central Diagnostic Laboratory. This laboratory (hosted by the Department of Plant Sciences, Microbiology and Biotechnology in CoNAS) upon completion will be a one-stop centre for diagnostic needs for scientists from across the 4-colleges of Makerere University (CoNAS, CAES, CoVAB, and CHS) that employ core biotechniques for their research. Dr Tugume is the PI of an on-going Banana BXW recovery project supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation), aimed at deciphering the underlying mechanisms of banana recovery from Xanthomonas wilt infestation.   

Dr Tugume has, in a period of 16 years (2002-2018) published 18 scientific research articles in international peer-reviewed journals, supervised 7 MSc and 25 BSc students to completion in subject areas of plant pathology, virology, genetics and plant breeding. He is currently supervising additional 5 MSc and 5 PhD students besides scores of BSc students in the same disciplines. He has examined 6 MSc and 3 PhD Dissertations/Theses, and also served as an opponent /discussant of 2 PhD defences in plant pathology/virology. He is a reviewer for the following international peer reviewed journals: African Journal of Agricultural Research, Plant Disease, Annals of Applied Biology, Plant Pathology; Journal of General Plant Pathology; African Journal of Biotechnology, Physiological and Molecular Plant Pathology, and Canadian Journal of Plant Pathology.

The Renewable Energy Research Group (RERG) at the Department of Physics, College of Natural Sciences (CoNAS), Makerere University, invites applications for a training workshop in Solar Photovoltaic Installation and Maintenance, Biogas Production and Solar Thermal Systems, which will be held at the Department of Physics from 16th-20th May 2022.

The training will mainly be based on practical design and connection of these systems.

THE SCOPE OF TRAINING WILL INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING

1. Introduction to Basic Electronics

2. Photovoltaic Systems (PV system components, Sizing, Installation, Maintenance and system safety)

3. Biogas Technology (Design, construction, Operation and Maintenance)

4. Solar heating systems (Basic principle, Design, construction, operation and maintenance)

PARTICIPATION

The training is open to researchers, students, trainers (teachers, technical institution tutors, solar suppliers, holiday makers) and any other interested persons. At the end of the training, participants will receive a certificate of completion.
