Latest News from CoNAS - Mon, 02/22/2021 - 03:03
Online Webinar on Monitoring and sustainable management of surface freshwater sources in Africa webadmin Mon, 02/22/2021 - 14:03

Water Sources For Africa (WaSAf) is an international project on the Monitoring and sustainable management of surface freshwater sources in Africa used for the production of drinking water that  was implemented from 2015 to December 2019 on Lake Victoria plus two other water bodies in West Africa. (See https://humbert19.wixsite.com/wasaf/home)

The project has a consortium of African and French research teams working in the field of human and environmental sciences. With strong involvement of all stakeholders involved in the water and fisheries sector, from the management of natural resources to water supply. The funder being "Fonds Francais pour l'Environnement Mondial" (FFEM).

Expected results from the project:

1 -  Drawing up the dashboard for each ecosystem (Lake Victoria-Uganda, Lagoon Aghien - Ivory Coast, and Lake of Guiers - Senegal) containing indicators for the assessment of their water quality and  ecological status and indicating the objectives to be achieved for these indicators;

2 - Implementation of long term monitoring program for these ecosystems and proposition of guidelines, including decision trees, for the decision-making during a crisis;

3 - Creation of environmental observatories for aquatic ecosystems used for the production of drinking water and fisheries;

4 - Identification of the main pressures acting on aquatic ecosystems and their watershed and of their links with human uses and activities in the catchment areas;

5 - Awareness, education, and mobilization of people having an impact on the water quality in these ecosystems, and creating platforms for dialogue aiming at preparing the future actions that will be made  to limit the human impact on these ecosystems;

6 - Comparative analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of the governance in the water sector of the three African countries and proposition of alternative scheme of governance;

7 - Proposal and implementation of the first policy measures aiming to protect these aquatic ecosystems.

Please see attached a flyer for the webinar.
